Free things to do in London
Amazingly there are lots of free things to do when you are in London which is just as well because it can be a very expensive place to visit especially if you just stick to the tourist areas, here are a few places you might like to visit and they are all free.
The Wallace Collection: Hertford House, Manchester Square W1U 3BN
A collection of art put together by the Fourth Marquess of Hertford, who was a recluse who lived in Paris. He was helped by his son, Richard Wallace who inherited the collection. Paintings, porcelain and furniture make up the collection mainly from post-Revolutionary France. Richard Wallace moved the collection to England due to the unstable situation in France, and added many examples of Renaissance ceramics, bronzes, armour, and jewelry. His wife left the collection to the nation in 1897.
The Percival David Foundation of Chinese Art: 53 Gordon Square, WC1H 0PD
This hard to find museum holds one of the largest collections of Chinese ceramics outside China. It has over 2,000 objects dating all the way back to the 10th century and all collected by Percival David himself, it is well worth a visit.
The Bank of England Museum: Bartholomew Lane, EC2R 8AH
This is housed in the Bank of England itself, the museum shows the history of the Bank from 1694 when it was founded by Royal Charter. It offers an insight into of the history of Englands currency. Including ancient coins and ‘one off’ bank notes’, as well as other items uncovered when the bank was rebuilt in the 1930's including Roman pottery and mosaics.
Horniman Museum & Gardens: 100 London Road, SE23 3PQ
The Horniman Museum was created by Frederick John Horniman, in his original art nouveau home to show off the interesting things that he had collected from around the world. There is something of interest to everyone in this Museum, the exhibits include natural history, musical instruments, fossils and tribal artifacts. The Museum also has an aquarium and a miniature zoo, which is very popular with the children.
The Geffrye Museum: Kingsland Road, E2 8EA
The Geffrye Museum houses a collection of detailed room interiors dating from around 1600 to 1950. This Museum gives you an insight into British craft and furniture-making history, it also has a beautiful walled herb garden where you can see the use of herbs in medicine and cooking through the ages.
